Taking Care of You
Physical therapists are licensed health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve/restore mobility - in many cases without expensive surgery and often reducing the need for long-term use of prescription medications and their side effects. Physical therapists can teach patients how to prevent or manage their condition so that they will achieve long-term health benefits. They examine each individual and develop a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain and/or swelling, restore function, and prevent disability. Depending on your condition, your therapist will help you with flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, and/or balance. In addition, they work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing an exercise program. This program will be altered so it can be done at the clinic and even at home to make daily tasks and activities easier. The ultimate goal of physical therapy is to restore maximal functional independence to each individual patient. To achieve this goal, patient education, manual therapy, and physical modalities such as exercise, heat, cold, electrical stimulation, and massage are utilized.
